NEW ORLEANS – The Rice men's tennis team defeated Tulane 4-3 on Sunday at the Goldring Tennis Center.
The No. 60 Owls improved to 9-6 on the season and extended their winning streak to five matches.
Rice secured its 12th doubles point of the season to open the match. Tommy Czaplinski and Rafael Botran started things off with a 6-1 win over Asaf Friedler and AJ Merver. On Court 1, Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro improved to 15-7 on the year with a 7-5 victory against Daniel Phillips and Lance Nizbet to clinch the point. Yair Sarouk and Kabeer Kapasi were tied 6-6 with Alec Gaudin and Piotr Andrzejewski when the doubles point was decided.
The Owls carried the momentum into singles play, opening with a win on Court 2 as Navarro defeated Friedler 6-2, 6-1. Botran followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Gaudin to give Rice a 3-0 lead.
Tulane got on the board when Kapasi fell to Andrzejewski 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 on Court 3. Gabriel Porras clinched the match for Rice with a three-set victory over Steven Rice, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
Play continued after the clinch. Kuzmenok dropped a three-set match to Phillips 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Czaplinski closed out the day with a 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 loss on Court 5.
Rice will return to action next weekend with a pair of matches in Charlotte, beginning Friday against Charlotte before facing UTSA on Saturday.
