Owls Roll Past Tulsa in 4-0 Sweep

HOUSTON – The Rice men's tennis team opened its home stretch with a 4-0 sweep over No. 72 Tulsa on Friday night at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
The No. 57 Owls improved to 12-6 on the season and extended their winning streak to eight matches.
Rice grabbed the early advantage in doubles when Yair Sarouk and Kabeer Kapasi defeated Timo Carlsson and Nikita Volonski 6-3. The No. 48-ranked duo of Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Calum Jestin and Connor Doig. On court three, Rafael Botran and Tommy Czaplinski trailed 5-3 when play was halted.
In singles, No. 55 Kuzmenok defeated Volonski 7-5, 6-3. Gabriel Porras pushed the Owls' lead to 3-0 with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Komagata. Kapasi clinched the match with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Ruben Fernandez.
When play was halted, Navarro led 1-6, 7-5, 2-1 in the third set on court two. Botran was ahead 6-3, 3-6, 4-2 on court three, while Noey Do led 7-5, 3-4 on court six.
The Owls will face Memphis on Saturday at 1 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for Sunday but was moved up due to weather concerns.
