Kirchdorfer Tied for Lead; Owls in Second at Grier Jones Shocker Invitational

Newton, Kan. — The Rice Golf team used a second round score of -12 to sit in second-place heading into the final round of the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational.
 
The Owls are 15-under par, five shots behind host Wichita State. They opened the day with a three-under 285. But Rice caught fire in the second round, posting a 12-under par 276. The 12-under par ties the second lowest score to par since 1991, while the 276 ties the third lowest round. Its 36-hole score of 561 also ties the second lowest since 1991.
 
Graduate student Jay Kirchdorfer is in a five-way tie for the lead at nine-under par. He began the day by tying his then career-low with a 68. He then did one better in the second round, setting a new career-best with a 67.
 
Kirchdorfer's score to par of -9, along with his score of 135, both tied the school record through 36-holes. He now has a team-high five rounds of par or better this year and 25 in his career.
 
Junior Raghav Chugh is tied for ninth-place at seven-under par. He began the day by carding a two-under par 70, but he followed that up with his season-best round, firing a five-under 67, tying the best round of his career. He now has three rounds of par or better this year and 31 in his career, becoming the eighth player since 1991 with at least 30 career rounds of par or better.
 
Sophomore Lukas Boandl sits at even par in a tie for 32nd-place after carding rounds of 74-70. The 70 is his team-high fifth round of par or better this year and the 14th of his career. Freshman Jaivir Pande is tied for 41st-place at one-over par after rounds of 73-72. The 72 is his second round of par or better this year.
 
Freshman Braeden Hoyt, playing in his first career tournament, is four-over par after rounds of 77-71 to sit in a 61st-place tie. The 71 is his first career round under par and senior Blake Benson is tied for 72nd-place at six-over par after posting rounds of 76-74.
