Choudrant, La. — The Rice golf team fired a seven-under 281 during the first round of the season-opening Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, its best season-opening round since at least 1991, Sunday at Squire Creek Country Club.
The Owls are tied for eighth-place with South Alabama. The seven-under par is tied for the fifth lowest round to par since 1991 and is the lowest round to par since carding a nine-under par during the final round of the 2020 All-American Intercollegiate.
In his first career collegiate round, freshman Henry Daly fired a four-under 68 to sit in a tie for eighth-place. The Berkshire, England native opened with four straight pars before birdieing the 14th hole. After six straight pars, he birdied the third and fifth holes before closing his round with a birdie on the par-five ninth.
Graduate student Jay Kirchdorfer, in his first tournament for the Owls, is tied for 24th-place after firing a two-under par 70, tying his career-low round. Junior Blake Benson had the best round of his career, carding a one-under 71, his first career round under par, to sit in a tie for 41st-place.
Sophomore Raghav Chugh picked up where he left off from last year, firing an even par 72, his 16th career round of par or better. His round puts him in a tie for 54th-place. Freshmen Lukas Boandl and Davis Byrd are tied for 86th and 121st-place, respectively. Boandl posted a 74 while Byrd carded an 80.
Louisiana-Monroe leads the team competition at 14-under par, two strokes in front of Houston and Louisiana Tech. LSU's Garrett Barber is in the individual lead at seven-under par, one stroke in front of second-place, which has a three-way tie.
JUSTIN EMIL QUOTABLE
"The guys played clean golf today. We led the field in pars and made very few bogeys. These guys are in control of their golf ball and a low round is definitely out there for them. They are sticking to their game plan and executing shots well. We're definitely showing some visible wisdom out there."

The second round begins tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. Rice will tee off beginning at 11 a.m. with student-athletes from LSU, Middle Tennessee, and Southern Miss.
