Season ends at 15-8
Murfreesboro: The No. 57 Rice women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 33 Old Dominion in the semifinals of the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday. The Owls end the season at 15-8 while the top-seeded Monarchs improved to 19-6.
Doubles: ODU stormed out of the gates at the first and third lines and never allowed Rice an opportunity to respond to take the early lead.
Singles: In need of four singles wins to keep their quest for an eighth C-USA title alive, the Owls took three of six first sets in singles thanks to Allison Zipoli, Anna Bowtell, and Saara Orav. But ODU repelled any attempt to extend any of the three remaining matches, winning at the first, second and fifth lines in straight sets to defeat Rice for the first time in five meetings.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "Definitely disappointing that we aren't moving on but credit to ODU…they played a solid match across the board. The team kept fighting all season and I know that we'll have a fire in our belly as we head into next season. We are also hopeful Diae and Maria will be representing Rice in a few weeks in the NCAA doubles event."
