Owls fall in match-deciding tiebreaker
Champaign, IL: Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi fought back from a 6-1 loss in their opening set to force a match-deciding tiebreaker before falling to North Carolina's Cameron Morra and Carson Tanguilig in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Doubles Championship at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex on Tuesday night.
Budin and El Jardi, who came into the match ranked 22nd, found themselves down two quick breaks in the opening set to their 39th ranked opponents and lost the opening set 6-1. They found themselves with a 2-0 deficit in the second set before finding their footing with a service break and pushed to a 4-2 lead. Morra and Tanguilig rallied to tie it 4-4, and the teams traded service breaks before the Owls grabbed the set with one more break and a deuce point win to hold at 6-5.
The 10-point match deciding tiebreaker was tight through the first 11 points before the Tar Heel duo extended their lead and did not allow Budin and El Jardi a chance for one last comeback.
Budin and El Jardi end the season with a 14-6 record.
