Murfreesboro: The No. 57 Rice women's tennis team started fast and never allowed 69th ranked FAU a chance to rebound in a 4-0 win in the Conference USA Women's Tennis quarterfinals in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on Friday. The win sets up a semifinal showdown between Rice and top-seeded Old Dominion at noon on Saturday.
Doubles: Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi won for the eighth time in their last nine decisions and improved to 14-4 with a 6-2 win at the first line to give Rice the early advantage, while their teammates at the second and third lines followed closely behind to give Rice the first point of the day.
Singles: Senior Anna Bowtell dropped only one game to add a quick second point to the team total. She improved to 15-4 this season and 92-35 in her career to move into a tie for ninth on the Owls career wins list with Blair Henley, nee DiSesa, who was 92-59 from 2003-06. Allison Zipoli, who outlasted FAU's Lexi Silna in three sets to give Rice a 4-3 win over FAU in January, defeated Silna in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) to push the margin to 3-0, setting the stage for Maria Budin who ended the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the fifth line. The win was her eighth in a row and allowed her to tie Zipoli and Saara Orav for the team lead with four clinch points.
Up Next: Rice and Old Dominion have met four times in history, with each meeting at the Conference USA Championship and the Owls winning all four. They met in the quarterfinals in 2013 & 2014, the semifinals in 2018, and the finals at the George R. Brown Tennis Center in 2019. The doubles point battle will feature a matchup between ODU's seventh-ranked tandem of Tatsiana Sasnouskaya and Yuliia Starodubsteva and Budin and El Jardi, who moved up to 16th this week.
