Rice Drops Pitching Duel at No. 6 Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Rice held sixth-ranked Southern Miss to just one run, but it could not bring one across the plate as it dropped Friday night's series opener, 1-0.
The Story
Cooper Chandler stranded a runner in the first three innings but the Owls couldn't get anything going. Rice had a chance in the fourth inning when Nathan Becker roped a two-out double down the right field line. Aaron Smigelski then dropped a single just over the second baseman's glove, but the right fielder came up throwing and Becker was tagged out just before he touched home, keeping the game scoreless. Southern Miss broke the standstill in the sixth inning when Dustin Dickerson led off with a double and moved to third on a ground ball. Christopher Sargent then flew out to Guy Garibay, Jr., and Dickerson was able to get in just under Manny Garza's tag for the game's first run. Rice had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh when Smigelski led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. However, after Pierce Gallo struck out, Smigelski was thrown out at third trying to steal. Jack Ben-Shoshan ended the inning by grounding out to short. Rice then went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings to end the game.
Notes
• At the plate, Aaron Smigelski was 2x3 with a pair of singles for his eighth multi-hit game of the season.
• Nathan Becker picked up his eighth double of the year.
• Austin Bulman saw his 16-game on-base streak end.
• Cooper Chandler threw a season-long 7.0 innings, allowing just five hits while striking out four.
