HATTIESBURG, Miss. — A five-run outburst in the fifth inning propelled No. 6 Southern Miss to a 6-3 victory over Rice, Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Par.
The Story
Rice jumped on top in the second inning. With one out, Pierce Gallo singled and stole second. Two batters later, Justin Long singled up the middle to bring in Gallo for Rice's first run of the series. However, Southern Miss tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Will McGillis solo home run. Rice regained the lead in the third. After Jack Riedel and Guy Garibay, Jr. led off with back-to-back walks, Austin Bulman hit a fly ball to right. But the right fielder misplayed it, allowing Riedel to score. Nathan Becker was then hit by a pitch and Aaron Smigelski went the other way for an RBI single, knocking starter Hunter Riggins out of the game. But Isaiah Rhodes came in and got the next three batters, stranding the bases loaded, but not before Rice grabbed a 3-1 lead. But the Golden Eagles struck in the bottom of the sixth. McGillis and Charlie Fischer led off with back-to-back doubles. Blake Johnson then sent one over the left center field wall to give USM the lead. David Shaw came in to pitch, and after hitting the first batter, allowed a two-run single as Southern Miss took a 6-3 lead. The Owls had a chance to cut into the lead in the sixth when Hal Hughes and Jack Riedel drew leadoff walks. But after a pitching change, USM left them stranded. The Owls went hitless the rest of the way.
