Wrap up exhibtion schedule next Saturday vs. McLennan
Houston-Rice rolled in the first game and rallied in the second to sweep a pair of seven-inning exhibition games vs. San Jacinto Junior College at Reckling Park on Friday.
JC Davis drove in six of Rice's nine runs in a 9-1 win in the opener, while the Owls came back from a 3-0 deficit to score six runs over the final three innings to complete the sweep.
In the opener, the Owls jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning, scoring all their runs with two outs. Hiram Bocachica Jr. started the rally with a single and moved to second on a single by Zachary Gingrich. Landis Davila followed with the third consecutive single of the inning to score Bocachica. Zachary Daigre reached on an error to load the bases, setting the stage for the first of Davis's two three-RBI base hits, a double that cleared the bases.
The Ravens cut the margin to three with a single run in their half of the third, but Rice responded with two runs in the fourth, thanks to an RBI double by Daigre and a sacrifice fly by Caden Mitchell.
Davis closed the scoring, driving home Kahaku Harrison and Daigre with a home run to left. He finished his day with three hits in four at-bats, in addition to driving in six runs. Daigre scored three runs and Bocachica was 2x3.
Ethan Sanders scattered three hits over the first two innings. Tanner Wiggins was tagged for a solo homer in the third while Preston Sullivan (two innings) and Ty Baker (one inning) held the Ravens hitless over the final three innings.
When the teams moved immediately into the second game, the Ravens scored a single run off Ryland Urbanczyk in the first and two off Ethan Rivers in the third to take an early 3-0 lead, but Brayden Sharp slammed the door on any further offense by San Jac in the inning, stranding a pair of runners with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout.
The Owls broke through for a run in the bottom of the fifth as Silas Newport singled with two outs and scored on a Masa Chilcutt single up the middle.
Rice tied it in the sixth as Michael Zito and Judson Dowell led off with walks. Landon West scored Zito and sent Dowell to third with a ground-rule double, and Isaac Robles tied the game with an RBI groundout to score Dowell.
The Owls took the lead for good thanks to four consecutive walks to open their half of the seventh inning, with Dowell sending home the winning run with his free pass. A throwing error by the Ravens' catcher brought home the final two runs of the night.
Jeremiah Arnett, Carson Kuhn, Zachary Fetchel and Ty Thames followed Sharp to the hill and held San Jacinto off the scoreboard while allowing only two hits and striking out five.
Rice will wrap up its fall exhibition schedule on Saturday, October 24, when the Owls host McLennan Community College for a 14-inning game starting at 1 p.m.
