Rice and FAU Set for Rematch in C-USA Quarterfinals

Murfreesboro: Freshman Saara Orav won in both singles and doubles to lead Rice to a 4-0 win in the Owls' opening match at the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday afternoon.

Doubles: Orav teamed with Federica Trevisan to storm to a 6-0 win at the third line to give the Owls an early advantage. Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi, who moved up to 16^th in the ITA national doubles rankings earlier this week, closed the point out with a 6-3 win at the first line.

Singles: Rice carried the doubles momentum over into singles, winning all six first sets.   Orav's fellow freshman, Allison Zipoli, added the second point with a 6-2, 6-2 win to improve to 19-6 on the season and 14-4 during the spring. Senior Anastasia Smirnova matched Zipoli's result to move the Owls to within one point of the clinch, leaving it to Orav to close things out which she did with a 6-1, 6-0 win. It was her fourth clinch point this season, tying her with Zipoli for the team lead.

Up Next: Rice will face FAU at 1 p.m. on Friday for a berth in Saturday's semifinals. This will be the second meeting between the schools this season Rice downed FAU 4-3 in January in the consolation match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend Austin Regional This will be the third meeting between the schools and the second at the C-USA Championship.   Rice defeated the visiting Owls in 2019 when it hosted the 2019 conference championship.
