Owls sweep series for the first time since 2016
Huntsville: Four Rice relievers combined to toss 6.1 shutout innings while striking out 10 to lead Rice to a 5-1 win over Sam Houston on Tuesday night and give the Owls the first sweep of the season series since 2016.
The Details: Rice gave starter Mark Perkins an early lead as the Owls struck for a pair of runs in the opening frame as Aaron Smigelski drove in Jack Riedel and Guy Garibay Jr. with a one-out double. Riedel doubled to open the game and extend his hitting streak to nine games and Garibay followed with a walk. Perkins escaped a jam in the second when he loaded the bases with one out. Smigelski fielded a ground ball to retire the batter and then threw to Hal Hughes for an inning-ending double play. David Shaw came on in relief of Perkins with two outs in the third after Sam Houston halved the Owls lead on a double by Justin Wishkoski. Facing Carlos Contreras, who leads the nation with 59 RBI and is third with a .440 average with the tying run at second, Shaw worked ahead in the count and then retired him on a fly to center. Becker doubled in the fourth and scored on a wild pitch to give the Owls some breathing room while Shaw and Roel Garcia held the Bearkats off the board. Hal Hughes gave the Owls insurance with a two-run double in the top of the eighth and Brandon Deskins worked a scoreless eighth to turn the game over to Matthew Linskey, who struck out the side in the ninth.
