HUNTINGTON, W.V. — Nathan Becker's RBI double in the ninth inning capped off a four-run rally as Rice clinched the weekend series at Marshall, 6-5.
The Story
Rice wasted no time taking the lead, this time without a hit as it walked four times in the first inning, the last of which by Connor Walsh to score Guy Garibay, Jr. But Marshall, with the help of two Rice errors, scored four times in the bottom half. The Thundering Herd added another run in the second on a two-out, RBI single by Cole Williams. The Owls cut into the lead in the fourth. After Pierce Gallo, Johnny Hoyle and Justin Long loaded the bases with no outs, a pair of ground outs by Drew Woodcox and Guy Garibay, Jr. scored two. Austin Bulman then hit a double into the right field corner, scoring Long to make it a 5-4 game. Rice had chances in each of the next three innings but could bring one across. However, in the top of the eighth, Justin Long and Woodcox walked. Garibay then hit a single into left and after the left fielder bobbled the ball, Long came in to tie the game at five. Marshall had a chance to retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with no outs. But after getting a force out at home, he induced a fly out to right and a grounder to short to strand the runners. Rice took advantage in the ninth when, after Aaron Smigelski drew a leadoff walk, Nathan Becker drove a double into left center field and Smigelski came around to score, sliding in just before the catcher's tag. Matthew Linskey then came on to close it out for his fourth save.
