HUNTINGTON, W.V. — Marshall scored once in the eighth inning to break a tie as Rice dropped the series finale to the Thundering Herd, 5-4, Sunday afternoon.
The Story
Marshall took an early lead in the first inning when, after Alex DeLeon got the first two outs, Marshall got three straight hits to plate two runs. The Thundering Herd added another run in the third inning, again getting two, two-out hits. But Rice battled back. The Owls scratched out a run in the fourth inning when after an error and a Nathan Becker single, Pierce Gallo singled to right field, bringing in Aaron Smigelski for their first run. They then grabbed the lead in the fifth inning. Johnny Hoyle led off with a double. Two batters later, Jack Riedel brought him home. After a Guy Garibay walk, Austin Bulman singled and Smigelski reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Garibay and give Rice the 4-3 lead. But Marshall tied it up in the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, both teams loaded the bases but couldn't bring anyone across the plate. However, in the bottom of the eighth, Kyle Schaefer walked and stole second. Daniel Carinci then doubled into right field, scoring Schaefer with the winning run.
