C-USA season opens on Friday
The Details: After the Bearkats (11-6) opened the scoring with a solo run in the top of the second, the Owls (5-13) manufactured a run to tie it up. Connor Walsh was hit by a pitch leading off the inning and stole second. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Johnny Hoyle and scored on a ground out to first base by Gallo. Rice starter Thomas Burbank erased a threat in the top of the third by picking off Sam Houston's Justin Wishkoski to end the inning and his Owls teammates responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good. Garibay led off the inning with the first of his four hits and he scored on Nathan Becker's first career triple. Jack Riedel followed with a single to drive in Becker. After an error and a single loaded the bases, Gallo drove in his second run with another ground out. Sam Houston cut the Rice lead to 5-4 with single runs in the fourth and fifth, but Rice answered with five in the bottom of the fifth. Gallo started the scoring with a RBI single and then with the bases loaded, Justin Long drove a ball into left-center that Sam Houston's Clayton Chadwick snared with a diving catch, but both Hoyle and Walsh were able to tag up and score on the sacrifice fly. Drew Woodcox followed with an RBI double and he scored on a single by Garibay. Rice added four runs in the eighth to top double figures in runs in consecutive games for the first time this season.
Notable:
- After scoring 56 runs in their first 16 games, the Owls have scored 32 over the past two nights.
- Rice's 32 runs in the last two games are the most for the Owls in consecutive games since they scored 38 at UAB on May 18-19, 2017.
- Rice has collected 33 hits over the last two games and raised its team batting average from .210 to .238.
- On the mound, four Rice pitchers combined to strike out 10 Sam Houston hitters, the fifth time in the last six games they have reached double digits. Over their last 63 innings, the staff has fanned 73 batters.
- The win at home over Sam Houston broke a streak in which the road team had won the last six games of the series played on campus. The last win by the home team at their stadium in the series was Rice in 2016.
- Becker's triple was the first in 36 games for Rice.
- Garibay matched his career-high with four hits and has gone 8x11 with eight RBI and five runs scored over the last two games.

- Drew Woodcox collected his third double in the last two games and he has driven in runs in three consecutive games (5 total).
- Johnny Hoyle made the start at third base and collected a career-high three hits, scored twice, and stole a base.
- Gallo's four RBI doubled his season total. He has driven in a run in three consecutive games.
- Freshman Tom Vincent came on in relief of Burbank with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth and after a walk, he coaxed a ground ball to end the threat and was credited with his first career win.
- Matthew Linskey closed the game out in the ninth by striking out the side. He has 12 strikeouts in his last four innings and has fanned 15 in six innings (seven appearances).
