Owls Drop Nail-Biter to Tech
3/12/2022 6:32:00 PM | Baseball
Series wraps at 1 p.m. on Sunday
In Brief: After being held hitless for seven innings, Rice rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth to tie 15th ranked Texas Tech, but the Red Raiders answered with a run in the top of the ninth and survived a final challenge from the Owls in the bottom of the ninth to win 3-2 at Reckling Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Details: While the game was played in sunshine after the frigid conditions for the opener on Friday starting pitchers Brandon Birdsell and Roel Garcia kept the offenses ice cold as they combined to strike out 17 hitters in the first three innings. Birdsell fanned four in each of the first two innings as a pair of Owls reached base on throwing errors after striking out. Tech scored unearned runs in the first and fourth and Garcia, who allowed only two hits while fanning a career-high nine in four innings, appeared headed for a tough loss as Birdsell held the Owls hitless over six innings. Freshman David Shaw held down the Red Raiders potent lineup for two innings and Alex Deleon followed with a pair of scoreless frames as the Owls came to bat in the eighth only trailing 2-0. Freshman Jack Ben-Shoshan reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second. Jack Riedel split the gap in left-center to drive him home and also end Tech's bid for a no-hitter. Guy Garibay came on as a pinch hitter and drove in Riedel to tie the game. After Tech scratched out a run in the top the ninth, the Owls put the tying run in scoring position with one out in the ninth. Connor Walsh reached on an infield single and a throwing error but could not cover the final distance as Tech closed out its 13th win of the year.

Notable:
- Rice was last no-hit on May 25, 2019 when Southern Miss eliminated the Owls from the C-USA tournament and was last held hitless for nine innings at home on March 7, 1992 when Wade Williams of Houston held the Owls hitless for 10.1 innings.
- Garcia's nine strikeouts were a season-high for the Owls as well as a career-best, topping his eight strikeout effort last season at Louisiana. They were also one more than his total in his first three appearances (two starts) this season. He has not allowed an earned run in his last two starts and has struck out 11 over that span (8 innings).
- Rice pitchers fanned a season-high 13 and have struck out 10 or more in each of the last three games.
- Freshman David Shaw worked a season-best two innings and allowed just one walk… He has not allowed a run in his last four appearances (five innings).
- Jack Riedel's RBI double in the 8th gave him five RBI in the last three games.
- Nathan Becker extended his streak of reaching base to 10 games with his walk in the seventh inning.
