Tech Rallies to Gain Sweep

In Brief: No. 15 Texas Tech rallied for six runs to overtake Rice and gain a sweep of the weekend with a 7-4 win at Reckling Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Details: The Owls went to work early to take their first lead of the weekend. Drew Wilcox lead off the game for Rice with a double to left-center and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Smigelski. Tech tied it with a run in the third, but the Owls put three on the board in the fourth. Antonio Cruz laced a double on the 10th pitch of his at-bat and Justin Long was hit by a pitch. Pierce Gallo drove Cruz home to retake the lead and Woodcox followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 4-1. Rice starter Parker Smith was sharp early and was backed by a pair of double plays to work out of trouble in the second and fourth innings. The Red Raiders chased him with one out in the fifth. Tech's offense, which had been held in check by the Owls over the last two games, scored a pair in the fifth and then gave the Red Raiders the lead for good with three in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Notable:
- Tech came into the weekend hitting .285 as a team and had slugged 18 homers in its first 14 games, but the Owls held them to a .254 average on the weekend and surrendered only one home run. The Owls only allowed one earned run in the first inning to the Red Raiders who had scored 12 runs in the first inning over their first 14 games.
- Matthew Linskey worked a scoreless ninth and struck out the side in his third consecutive appearance. He has not allowed a run in his six appearances this season and has struck out 12 in five innings.
- Aaron Smigelski singled and drove in a run with a sac fly. He has hit in 10 of his first 11 games in his career and leads the team with 11 RBI.
- Nathan Becker extended his streak of reaching base to 11 games with his pinch-hit single in the ninth.
- Rice pinch hitters are hitting .368 this year (7x19) while opposing pinch hitters are only 1x13 (.077).
