Middle game set for 2 p.m. Saturday
In Brief: No. 15 Texas Tech broke open a tight contest with four runs in the fifth and went on to defeat Rice 10-1 on a cold and blustery Friday night at Reckling Park.
The Details: With a game-time temperature of 46 degrees and winds gusting to 30 MPH, the two teams were knotted at 1-1 after three innings. The Red Raiders jumped back in front 2-1 in the fourth, but Rice threatened to take the lead in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with two outs before Tech started ended the threat with a strikeout. The Red Raiders rode that momentum into the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits and an error. They added two in the sixth and single runs in the eighth and ninth.

Notable:
- The win was the first for Texas Tech in three games at Reckling Park. Rice defeated the Red Raiders in the 2002 NCAA regional and in a regular-season game in 2013. Tech has now won five in a row over Rice.
- Aaron Smigelski's RBI single in the third extended his career-opening hitting streak to nine games and allowed him to tie Austin Bulman for the team lead with 10 RBI. He has driven in a run in four of his last five games (eight total).
- Nathan Becker singled and walked to match Smigelski for the team lead by reaching base in his ninth consecutive game.
- Austin Bulman extended his hitting streak to five games and has now reached base in 12 of 14 games this season.
- Owls' starter Cooper Chandler fanned five in four innings to increase his team lead to 22.
- Catcher Cullen Hannigan made his season debut as a defensive replacement in the top of the ninth.
