Owls host Washington on Friday
In Brief: Allison Zipoli rallied from being down a set and trailing 3-1 in the second to deliver a clinching 6-1 win in her third set to give Rice a 4-3 win over FAU in the consolation round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend Austin Regional on Saturday.
Doubles: After FAU struck first with a win at the second line, Federica Trevisan and Victoria Smirnova struck back with a 6-3 win at the third position. The deciding match at the first line proved to be a precursor for what was to follow in singles and the two teams extended each other deep into the match before Diae El Jardi and Maria Budin won a tiebreaker to give the Owls the crucial opening point.
Singles: The teams split the opening first sets of singles, but neither could hold their advantage on those courts through the second. Anna Bowtell struck quickly to extend the lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the fourth line, but FAU struck back with straight-set wins of its own at the first and fifth positions. Anastasia Smirnova grabbed the lead back for Rice with a win at the second line, but the final two matches saw first set leads flip to the other team. Zipoli found herself in 3-1 hole after dropping her first set, but she found her form and won five of the last six games in the second set to even things. After FAU tied the match 3-3 with a win at six put the match on her racquet, she responded with a 6-1 win to give Rice the win.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "I was really proud of the team for the fight out there today. Everyone did their part and kept plucking away and in the end, got a hard-fought team victory. It was great to see Alli turn that match around and raise her level of play as the match went along."
Up Next: The Owls will return home next weekend to host Washington. The Huskies (4-0) face host UCLA on Saturday for a berth in the ITA Indoor Championship.
