SMU Halts Rice Rally
1/28/2022 8:54:00 PM | Women's Tennis
Face SMU at 2 p.m. Saturday
In Brief: Allison Zipoli and Maria Budin led a fierce Rice rally in singles, but the Owls could not overcome the loss of the doubles point and four of six first singles sets and fell to SMU 4-2 in the opening round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend Austin Regional on Friday. Rice (1-1) will face FAU (2-3) will meet in a consolation match at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Doubles: SMU took the early advantage with a win at the first line, but the outcome on the final two courts came down to the wire. Federica Trevisan and Victoria Smirnova battled back from 5-4 to take a 6-5 lead at the third line and were leading in the 12th game when SMU capped a comeback from a 5-4 deficit at the second line to clinch the point with a 7-5 win at the second line.
Singles: The Mustangs kept the pressure on by taking four of six first sets in singles. Zipoli and fellow freshman Saara Orav posted opening set wins, Zipoli making a quick counter after the loss in doubles by taking her first set 6-1 and Orav adding a 7-5 win in her opener. Budin stormed back from a first set loss to take her second 6-0 and force the first two third sets the Owls needed to keep their hopes of victory intact. Zipoli closed out her match with a 6-4 win in the second set to briefly tie the match at 1-1, but SMU moved to within a point of the clinch with straight-set wins at the first two lines. Anna Bowtell ground out a 9-7 win in a tiebreak to force a second third set while Budin closed out her match to cut the gap to 3-2. But the rally fell short as SMU's Lana Mavor rebounded to defeat Bowtell in the third set and deliver the clinching point.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "It was disappointing we weren't able to win this match but, as usually the case with early-season tests, there is a lot we can take from it as we move forward and it is now all of our duties to do that. We played solid in streaks in doubles but still need to iron some things out there. Our play in singles on several courts definitely got better as the match went along and was great to see Alli really dominate on her court from start to finish. We are looking forward to getting back out there again tomorrow."
Up Next: After wrapping up play in Austin with a consolation match with FAU, the Owls will return home next weekend to host Washington. The Huskies (4-0) defeated Denver in the Los Angeles Kickoff Regional and will face host UCLA on Sunday.
