Rice Splits Doubleheader at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Rice defeated UTSA, 5-4, in Game One of a doubleheader before falling in the nightcap, 12-6, to earn a split Saturday at Roadrunner Field.
In the first game, UTSA got on the board in the first with a sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead. Rice threatened in the second, getting two men on, but could not bring them in. Rice grabbed the lead in the third inning. Cade Edwards and Braden Comeaux led off with singles and advanced on the throw. The Owls then played small ball as Bradley Gneiting and Austin Bulman brought them in on a pair of ground outs. But UTSA used a pair of two out hits to tie the game in the third.
Rice had a chance to take the lead in the fourth, getting two on with one out. But Edwards popped up and Comeaux struck out looking. UTSA took the lead in the fourth, scoring on a suicide squeeze. But Bradley Gneiting's one out home run in the fifth tied the game at three.
The Roadrunners retook the lead with a leadoff home run in the fifth, but Becker answered with a home run of his own in the sixth to once again tie the game. After shutting down UTSA in the sixth, Gneiting hit a one-out double in the seventh. Bulman then reached on an error by the left fielder and Guy Garibay hit a fly ball to center that was deep enough to bring in Gneiting for the winning run.
Rice jumped out early in the second game. Edwards led off the game with a double. After moving to third on a ground out, he came in to score on a wild pitch. However, the Owls used three pitchers in the bottom half as UTSA sent 13 pitchers to plate, scoring nine runs. UTSA added another run in the second.
But the Owls came back in the third. Edwards doubled and Comeaux reached on an error. Gneiting then walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Garibay doubled into the right field corner, clearing the bases before Garibay came home on the a throwing error. Will Karp then sent the next pitch over the left field wall as Rice pulled within 10-6.
UTSA scored twice more to make it a six-run game and retired 14 of the final 15 Rice batters to end the game.
For the record
Rice improved to 16-21-1 overall and 4-12-1 in Conference USA. UTSA fell to 15-16 overall and 7-9 in C-USA.
