Rice Drops Series Finale to UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A six-run fifth inning doomed Rice as it fell to UTSA, 12-4, Sunday afternoon in the series finale.
UTSA threatened in the second inning. With two on and one out after a pair of singles, Johnathan Tapia singled to left field. But Cade Edwards hit Braden Comeaux with the cut off throw, who nailed the runner at the plate. Roel Garcia then got Chris Shull to foul to first base to end the inning.
Rice got on the board first in the fourth. Comeaux doubled down the left field line and moved to third on Bradley Gneiting's ground out. Austin Bulman then singled to right field to give the Owls an early lead.
However, in the fifth, UTSA struck for six runs, three of which came off a three-run home run. The Roadrunners added another in the seventh.
Rice inched closer in the eighth. With one out, Comeaux and Gneiting hit back-to-back singles, forcing UTSA to go to its bullpen. But Bulman sent a pitch over the left field wall to cut the deficit in half. However, the Roadrunners added five runs in the bottom half to put the game away.
For the record
Rice improved to 17-23-1 overall and 5-14-1 in Conference USA. UTSA fell to 17-17 overall and 9-10 in C-USA.

• Austin Bulman tied a season-high for hits, going 3-for-4 with a home run for his sixth multi-hit game of the year.
• It was his fourth home run of the year.
