Rice Defeats UTSA, 8-6, in Series Opener
4/23/2021 11:44:00 PM | Baseball
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Rice jumped on UTSA early and Brandon Deskins went the final five innings, striking out eight as the Owls earned a series opening victory over the Roadrunners, 8-6, Friday night.
Rice struck first in the opening frame. Bradley Gneiting hit a two-out single to left field and Austin Bulman moved him to third with a double down the left field line. Gneiting then scored the game's first run on a passed ball. However, a 1:54 minute lightning delay halted the game.
After the game resumed, Rice added two more in the second. After singles by Will Karp and Nathan Becker to lead off the inning, Hal Hughes brought in Karp with a sacrifice fly. Two batters later, Cade Edwards singled through the left side, bringing in Becker.
UTSA scored twice in the third, but Rice retook its three-run lead in the fourth on back-to-back home runs by Becker and Hughes on the first two pitches of the inning. But Roadrunners took their first lead of the game in the fourth, scoring four times.
Rice came right back in the fifth. Austin Bulman reached on a catcher's interference and Karp singled up the middle to move him to third. Becker then brought him in with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at six. The Owls regained the lead in the sixth, taking advantage of a UTSA miscue. After Justin Dunlap singled, Cade Edwards grounded into the hole at short. But the shortstop threw the ball away, allowing both Dunlap and Edwards to move up and eventually score on groundouts.
Deskins did the rest as he allowed just four hits over the final five innings to earn the victory.
For the record
Rice improved to 16-21-1 overall and 4-12-1 in Conference USA. UTSA fell to 15-16 overall and 7-9 in C-USA.
