Owls Advance To Thursday Semifinals
HOUSTON — The No. 25 ranked Rice soccer team registered its seventh straight victory, and its sixth consecutive shutout, in a 3-0 home win over Old Dominion on Tuesday's opening quarterfinal round of the Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship Tuesday evening at the Owls' Holloway field.
Owls Advance To Semis
With the win the Owls advance to the semifinal round against West No. 3 seed Southern Miss on Thursday at 7 pm. The Golden Eagles defeated FAU 2-1 in the bracket's other semifinal.
For The Record
Rice improved to 11-2-0 overall. Old Dominion closed out its season at 4-5-2.
Scoring Story
Old Dominion was on the offensive with most of the early shots, but the Owls broke through for the first score of the game and never looked back. In the 22nd minute dangerous all-conference honoree Delaney Schultz sent a rocket shot on goal from the left wing that the ODU keeper made the save. The ball may not have gone in for Schultz, but it bounded away in front of the goal. Owl junior Madison Kent alertly dashed in and stabbed the ball to the back of the Monarch net for a 1-0 lead with her fifth goal of the season.
In the 29th minute Rice's Bella Killgore, the C-USA Goalkeeper of the Year, again showed her offensive skills. The Houston native came forward to take a free kick just outside the 18 and buried the shot to the back netting for fourth goal of the season for a 2-0 advantage.
The league's Goalkeeper of the Year scored a goal in the first half, and the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year followed suit in the second half. In the 63rd minute, Mijke Roelfsema curved a corner kick home to the back of the net for her third goal of the season and a 3-0 lead.
