Owls Roar Back to Bounce Shockers
2/26/2021 4:08:00 PM | Women's Tennis
Host No. 25 Arizona State on Sunday
Houston: The Rice women's tennis rebounded from a sluggish start to overcome the loss of a doubles point for the first time since 2018 and race to a 4-1 win over Wichita State at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Friday. The match was the first this year open to the public.
Doubles: The Shockers took the early advantage with 6-1 win at the third line and held on to an early break advantage at the first position to take the early 1-0 lead.
Singles: Rice responded to the loss of the doubles point by roaring out of the gates in singles, dropping only seven games across six courts to sweep the first sets. Michaela Haet, Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi maintained their momentum into the second sets, dropping only seven games between then to clinch the match.
Notable: Rice had lost its last 12 matches when dropping the doubles point before the win on Friday. The Owls last overcame a loss in doubles to win on April 8, 2018 in a match at South Florida. Maria Budin improved to 5-2 in dual singles, matching her win total from the shortened 2020 spring season.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "The doubles was two-fold. Wichita State plays very solid and aggressive doubles and they played very well. I also thought we were a bit rusty and didn't have our feet underneath us. That's to be expected somewhat after the last couple of weeks, but what I was super impressed with was how our team stepped up, with no panic, and went to do work on their court in singles. The scores were convincing (in the first sets), but there were a lot of deuce points in there that we were able to win. I'm really pleased with the composure that our team showed after that doubles point. It was a total team effort and now we look forward to played (#25) Arizona State on Sunday. "
Up Next: The Owls continue the homestand on Sunday when they host No. Arizona State at 11 a.m. Fans are now permitted to attend matches at GRBTC with the following protocols.
