Game Two on Monday
Ben Dukes collected three hits and Drew Woodcox drove in a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly and a home run to spark the Blue team to 5-1 win over the Gray in the opening game of Rice's Fall Ball World Series on Friday night.
Cooper Chandler picked up the win by opening with three scoreless innings, setting the tone of the night by working out of a pair of early jams and stranding five. He joined Alex DeLeon, Brandon Deskins, Caleb Matthews and Micah Davis in stranding 14 Gray base runners on the night.
After Roel Garcia struck out the side for the Gray in the first inning, the Blue struck for a run on three consecutive hits in the second with Jack Riedel driving in Justin Long with the first run. Garcia avoided further trouble by getting a double play, but surrendered a second run in the third inning. Ben Rosengard tripled with one out and then came home on Woodcox's sacrifice fly.
Woodcox extended the lead in the fifth with a home run to center off Drake Greenwood.
The Blues extended the lead to 5-0 on an error and an RBI ground out by Nathan Becker.
Connor Walsh tripled off Matthews to lead off the eighth and came home on a ground out by Manny Garza to foil the bid for a shutout by the Blues.
The series will resume on Monday night, with the Gray in need of a win to extend the series to a third and deciding game on Wednesday.
