LUBBOCK – The No. 2 ranked Texas Tech baseball team scored seven runs on nine hits for a 7-1 win over the visiting Rice Owls in the opening game of a weekend series Friday night in Lubbock.
Records/Series: Rice is now 2-11 on the season. Texas Tech improved to 14-1 overall. The former conference rivals were meeting for the 114th time dating back to 1958.
Welcome Returns: The Owls were glad to get two players back in action Friday. Senior Braden Comeaux had been sidelined the last six games but he started at his normal spot at third base and batted in the leadoff position. He scored the Owls' lone run in the top of the third inning to make it a 2-1 game. Junior Justin Collins was back behind the plate after getting one game of rest Wednesday night vs. Houston. Collins threw out a Red Raider runner attempting to steal a base in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Hit Leaders: The veteran duo of Bradley Gneiting and Trei Cruz both collected two hits. Cruz took over the team lead with his sixth game with two or more hits. Gneiting has tallied two or more hits four times playing in 12 of the team's 13 games.
On The Bump: Junior right-hander Alex DeLeon started on the mound for the Owls. The Lago Vista, Texas, native tied his career high with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings on the road against the No. 2 team in the country. Freshman Mathew Santos struck out a batter in his 1.0 inning of work. Kel Bordwine fired a pair of scoreless frames without allowing a base hit.
Blue & Gray: For the first time this season Rice wore its blue jersey with gray pants. The Owls have worn seven different uniforms in 13 games played.
Different Dugout: The Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park setup has the Owls in the third base dugout. Rice had been in the first base dugout each of the previous 12 games, including eight at Reckling Park and four in road venues at Texas State and UC Irvine.
Saturday Start Time: Game two of the weekend series is scheduled for a 3 pm first pitch. The start time is a change from an earlier listing.
