Tigers Start Fast and Hold off Owls

Houston: Anna Bowtell extended her singles winning streak to six matches, but Rice dropped a 4-1 decision to 40th ranked LSU at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Sunday.
Doubles: LSU used wins at the first two lines to stake out the early advantage. Bowtell and Victoria Smirnova held a 5-4 lead at the third line when the point was clinched.
Singles: In need of four wins in singles to overtake the Tigers, Rice split the first six sets in singles with Bowtell, Priya Niezgoda and Smirnova winning opening sets. Bowtell maintained her pace to post a 6-4, 6-3 win over LSU's Paris Corley. Smirnova held a 5-3 lead on 75th ranked Safiya Carrington when the Tigers clinched while Niezgoda was headed to a third set with Eden Richardson when the match concluded.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "Obviously we got three first sets and were close on a couple of others, but LSU is a very good team and to be able to beat a good team you have to be consistent point by point. You have to be able to lose a point and get back to your game on the next point. We weren't able to do that enough across the board enough on all six courts today. Credit to LSU. They stayed solid and played their game."
Up Next: The Owls will face Conference USA foe UTSA at 1 p.m. on Friday and then join again with the men's team for a second combined dual match on March 1 when the women host Baylor and the men host SMU
