Owls Run Winning Streak to Seven Straight

Three players score in double-figures in 69-61 road win at UTEP
EL PASO, Texas – The Rice Owls women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 69-61 road victory at UTEP Thursday evening, extending their unbeaten streak over Conference USA opponents to 26 straight and a 7-0 start in league play this season.
Rice (12-6, 7-0) had three players score in double-figures, led by a game-high 21 points from senior guard Erica Ogwumike. In addition to her scoring, Ogwumike grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season and the 40th of her Rice career. Junior guard Sydne Wiggins contributed 14 points and dished out a career-high seven assists while junior center Nancy Mulkey filled the stat sheet with 10 points, eight rebounds and nine blocks in 23 minutes.
The Owls also got a boost from freshman forward Ashlee Austin, who scored a season-high nine points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Rice outscored the Miners (11-6, 4-2) 40-30 in points in the paint and recorded their second-most blocks (13) in a game this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Owls closed the quarter on a 9-3 run to win the opening period, 20-13. Wiggins got Rice out to a good start with seven points while Ogwumike chipped in five points. After UTEP scored six points in the opening minute, Rice held the Miners to just seven points on 2-of-11 shooting the rest of the quarter. The Owls scored nine points in transition in the quarter.
Second Quarter
The Rice defense was even more impressive in the second period, limiting the Miners to just eight points in the quarter on 3-of-15 shooting. Austin came off the bench to score six points for the Owls in the quarter on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting. The Owls took a 30-21 lead into the locker room.
Third Quarter
UTEP made a bit of a run midway through the quarter, trimming the Rice lead down to 37-31, but the Owls managed to bump their lead back up to 50-39 entering the fourth. Ogwumike scored six points in the period to lead Rice in scoring.
Fourth Quarter
Rice showed their championship pedigree in the fourth by answering a UTEP run that had cut the deficit to 52-48 with 7:20 remaining. The Owls went on a 9-0 run out of a timeout to push the lead back up to 61-48 after a Wiggins three-pointer. Ogwumike scored 10 points in the quarter while Mulkey stabilized the defense with six blocks.

The Owls will look for their eighth straight win on Saturday when they travel to San Antonio to face the UTSA Roadrunners. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
