Historic Season Ends in WBIT Second Round

LAWRENCE – The Rice women's basketball team saw its season end in the WBIT Second Round after a 62-55 loss to Kansas Sunday evening at Allen Fieldhouse. The Owls finished the season with a 29-6 mark.
Louann Battiston led the Owls with 13 points, four assists and three rebounds, while Dominique Ennis added 11 points and four rebounds. Aniah Alexis rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist.
As a team, Rice shot 19-of-61 (31.1%) from the floor and 6-of-30 (20%) from three-point range. The Owls added an 11-of-12 (91.7%) showing from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED,
First Quarter
Kansas grabbed the first four points before a Battiston three got the Owls on the board. Trailing by three, Alexis drilled a three-pointer to even the score. Down three again, Shelby Hayes brought Rice within a point with a layup. The Owls trailed 16-12 after one.
Second Quarter
The Jayhawks opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run before Battiston snapped the streak with a triple. Kansas extended the lead to 14 points with Hailey Adams getting the Owls back on the board with a jumper. Rice trailed 31-19 at the half.
Third Quarter
Adams and Alexis traded scores with Kansas to open the third, with Ennis and Battiston tacking on scores to get within single digits. After a run gave the Jayhawks a 15-point lead, back-to-back Ennis and Jordin Blackmon three's got Rice within nine. The Owls trailed 49-39 after three.
Fourth Quarter
After the Jayhawks pushed the lead to 15 points, Ennis and Adams converted back-to-back shots to pull within 11 points. Down 60-48, Alexis free throws, followed by a Blackmon and-one conversion, cut the deficit to seven, but Rice's rally ultimately fell short.
