Owls Travel to UTSA in Search of 8th Straight Win
The Conference USA leading Rice Owls will look to remain unbeaten in league play when they travel to UTSA on Saturday. The Owls have started 7-0 in the new year, winning those contests by an average of 15.4 points. UTSA has dropped three straight games, including a 79-55 loss to North Texas on Thursday. The Owls have won five of their last six meetings against the Roadrunners, including a pair of wins last season by an average of 28.5 points.
About UTSA
The Roadrunners are led in scoring by freshman point guard Mikayla Woods, who is averaging 14.8 points per game. As a team the Roadrunners are averging just 63.5 points per contest and are shooting 38.7 percent from the field.
C-USA Dominance
The Owls have the fourth-longest active conference win streak in the country dating back to 2018, having won 26 straight league contests. Only UConn (142), Baylor (47) and FGCU (34) have won more consecutive conference games than the Owls. The 26 consecutive wins is also the longest conference winning streak in league history. The Owls went 16-0 in league play last year with a winning margin of 19.2 points per game. Rice finished the season as one of just seven teams undefeated in conference play across the nation. Only Houston (16-0; 2010-11) and UTEP (16-0; 2007-08) completed perfect C-USA seasons before Rice, neither of which won their respective conference tournaments.
Last Time Out
The Owls earned a hard-fought 69-61 road victory at UTEP Thursday evening, extending their unbeaten streak over Conference USA opponents to 26 straight and a 7-0 start in league play this season. Rice had three players score in double-figures, led by a game-high 21 points from senior guard Erica Ogwumike. In addition to her scoring, Ogwumike grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season and the 40th of her Rice career. Junior guard Sydne Wiggins contributed 14 points and dished out a career-high seven assists while junior center Nancy Mulkey filled the stat sheet with 10 points, eight rebounds and nine blocks in 23 minutes.
