
Owls Fend off Roadrunners, 74-62

SAN ANTONIO – Rice senior guard Erica Ogwumike matched a season-high with 30 points while junior guard Sydne Wiggins added a career-high 18 points to help the Owls secure a 74-62 road victory at UTSA Saturday afternoon.
The Owls (13-6, 8-0), who sit alone in first place in the Conference USA standings, ran their winning streak over conference opponents to 27 consecutive games by dominating the Roadrunners (6-12, 2-5) on the boards by a 44-15 advantage.
Ogwumike did much of her damage in the second half, exploding for 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the field (2-of-2 at the free throw line). The C-USA Preseason Player of the Year also recorded a game-high 13 rebounds for her sixth straight double-double and seventh of the season.
Wiggins scored 14 of the Owls 20 second quarter points by making 4-of-5 shots from the field, including a 3-of-3 performance from beyond the arc. Rice also received double-digit scoring from freshman Lauren Schwartz (11 points).
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Owls scored the final six points of the opening period to lead 13-11 after the opening 10 minutes. Schwartz and Ogwumike scored five points apiece in the quarter and Rice managed to hold a lead despite shooting 27 percent from the field.
Second Quarter
UTSA led 22-17 with 3:48 remaining in the half before Wiggins responded with a flurry, scoring 12 points the rest of the quarter on three made three-pointers, a layup in transition and an assist. Included in the 16-4 Rice run was a Wiggins four-point play at the 2:45 mark, giving the Owls a lead they would never relinquish.
Third Quarter
Ogwumike helped carry that momentum over into the second half with a perfect shooting performance in the third period, scoring 19 points in the quarter on an 8-of-8 performance from the field and 2-of-2 at the free throw line. The Owls scored 14 points in the paint and outscored the Roadrunners 23-14.
Fourth Quarter
Leading 56-40 entering the final quarter, the Owls never allowed the Roadrunners to get to within single digits the rest of the way. Freshman Destiny Jackson contributed five points in the quarter and Rice made 10 free throws to put the game on ice.
