Owls Visit Mean Green on Saturday
Entering play as one of the hottest teams in the country, the Conference USA-leading Rice Owls women's basketball team will put their eight-game winning streak on the line Saturday at North Texas. The Owls just completed an 8-0 January, winning those contests by an average of 15 points. North Texas has started 3-5 in conference play, including a 67-63 loss at UTEP last Saturday. The Owls are 5-3 on the road and have won four straight away from Tudor Fieldhouse while North Texas is 7-4 at home. Rice is 8-1 in their last nine meetings with the Mean Green, including a 3-0 record last season.
About North Texas
The Mean Green rank 14th in the NCAA in total rebounds and are 20th in rebounds per game (42.7). Anisha George, the team's leading scorer (13.5 ppg) during league play, ranks first in C-USA in field goal percentage (65.5 percent), fifth in rebounding (8.9 rpg) and fourth in blocked shots (1.53 bpg). In their eight C-USA contests, North Texas is shooting just 38.2 percent from the field.
C-USA Dominance
The Owls have the fourth-longest active conference win streak in the country dating back to 2018, having won 27 straight league contests. Only UConn (143), Baylor (49) and FGCU (35) have won more consecutive conference games than the Owls. The 27 consecutive wins is also the longest conference winning streak in league history. The Owls went 16-0 in league play last year with a winning margin of 19.2 points per game. Rice finished the season as one of just seven teams undefeated in conference play across the nation. Only Houston (16-0; 2010-11) and UTEP (16-0; 2007-08) completed perfect C-USA seasons before Rice, neither of which won their respective conference tournaments.
Last Time Out
Rice senior guard Erica Ogwumike matched a season-high with 30 points while junior guard Sydne Wiggins added a career-high 18 points to help the Owls secure a 74-62 road victory at UTSA last Saturday. The Owls ran their winning streak over conference opponents to 27 consecutive games by dominating the Roadrunners on the boards by a 43-17 advantage.
Ogwumike C-USA Player of the Week
Ogwumike was recognized by the league office on Monday, earning the C-USA Player of the Week for the second time this season. She extended her double-doubles streak to six straight games with a pair last week, which included a season-high tying 30-point performance in Rice's win at UTSA. Through eight conference games, Ogwumike leads all of C-USA in scoring (20.7 ppg) and rebounding (11.5 rpg) and is fifth in field goal percentage (55.8).
