Mulkey scores game-high 21 points in 67-52 victory over Mean Green

DENTON, Texas – The Rice Owls women's basketball team led from nearly start-to-finish in a 67-52 road victory at North Texas Saturday afternoon, the team's ninth straight victory overall and fifth consecutive win on the road.
Rice (14-6, 9-0) maintained their first place lead in the Conference USA standings with their 28th consecutive league victory. Owls junior center Nancy Mulkey led all players with 21 points, 10 of those coming in a third quarter which Rice outscored the Mean Green 22-6.
Senior guard Erica Ogwumike (13 points/11 rebounds) registered her seventh consecutive double-double while junior guard Sydne Wiggins stuffed the stat sheet with six points, five assists (no turnovers), four rebounds and a steal. Freshman Lauren Schwartz also contributed eight points and six rebounds.
The Owls outshot North Texas (9-12, 3-6) by a margin of 58.5% to 39.7%, the sixth game Rice has shot 50 percent or better from the field in C-USA play. Rice dominated the boards (38-20) and scored 40 of their 67 points in the paint.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Rice outscored North Texas 13-5 to end the quarter and take a 15-10 lead. Mulkey set the tone early by scoring nine points on 4-of-5 shooting (1-of-1 at the free throw line). Twelve of Rice's 15 points occurred in the paint.
Second Quarter
Six different Owls registered points in the period, led by Kendall Ellig's six points on 3-of-3 shooting. Rice did damage at the free throw line by making 9-of-10 attempts in the quarter, including a 4-of-4 performance from Ogwumike. The Owls outscored the Mean Green 20-17 in the quarter to take a 35-27 halftime lead.
Third Quarter
Rice broke the game open with a dominating quarter, scoring 22 points while limiting the Mean Green to six points on 3-of-14 shooting. Mulkey was unstoppable in the post, scoring 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. The Owls made 9-of-11 field goal attempts (81.8%) in the quarter and scored 16 points in the paint.
Fourth Quarter
North Texas started the final 10 minutes on an 11-1 run but the Owls never allowed the Mean Green to creep closer than 14 points.
