Ogwumike records 1,000th career rebound
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women's basketball team earned their 10th consecutive win and in the process snapped the UAB Blazers six-game winning streak with a 64-53 victory Thursday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Rice (15-6, 10-0) defeated their 29th straight Conference USA opponent by limiting the conference's No. 1 scoring offense to its second-lowest scoring output of the season. UAB (15-8, 7-4) entered the game averaging 9.5 three-pointers made per game (7th in NCAA) but Rice's defense (ranked No. 22 in the NCAA) held the Blazers to just 4-of-19 shooting from beyond the arc.
Rice senior guard Erica Ogwumike came up just shy of her eighth consecutive double-double with a game-high 25 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Ogwumike surpassed 1,000 career rebounds in the contest, becoming just the 14th active player in the NCAA to accomplish the feat and only the second guard to do so.
Junior center Nancy Mulkey joined Ogwumike in double-figures with 14 points to go along with six rebounds and three blocks, her 10th game this season with three or more rejections.
The Owls outshot the Blazers 44 percent-34 percent and dominated the paint with a 36-14 scoring advantage.
Tina Langley Postgame Reaction
"UAB is a very good team who shares the ball really well and scores at a high rate. I was pleased with how our team played defensively and we really locked into scout-specific defense. Offensively, I think we started to find a flow as the game went on. I was really proud how our kids executed down the stretch."
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The two teams combined to make just 9-of-26 shots from the field but Rice's 7-0 run helped stabilize the Owls on offense. Rice won the quarter 11-9 as four different Owls registered points. UAB was held to 4-of-13 shooting (0-of-4 from deep) and committed four turnovers.
Second Quarter
Rice and UAB played to an 18-18 tie in the second period as Mulkey (8 points) and Ogwumike (7 points) combined to score 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. The Owls committed just one turnover in the quarter and took a 29-27 lead into the locker room.
Third Quarter
As has been the story for much of the conference season, Rice dominated the third period 19-12, shooting 63 percent from the field while holding UAB to a 27 percent clip. A 9-2 burst midway through the quarter had Mulkey's fingerprints all over it. The junior scored six of the points, recorded a block, and dished out of a double team that led to a made three-pointer by Lauren Schwartz. The Owls have now outscored their C-USA opponents by 84 points in the third quarter this season.
Fourth Quarter
After neither team was able to score for the first three minutes of the quarter the Owls used an 8-0 run to build their lead up to 56-41 with 4:13 remaining. Rice never allowed the Blazers to get to within single digits as they won their seventh consecutive home contest.
