Owls Blast Two Grand Slams In Second Inning
Saturday Game Time Change: Due to the threat of rain in the area Saturday's first pitch was moved up to a new 1 pm Central Time (2 pm Eastern).
Records: Rice is now 15-21 overall and 6-7 in C-USA action. Charlotte dropped to 12-20 on the season and 3-9-1 in league play.
Slam Fest: Not only did Rice hit two grand slams in a game for the second time this season, the Owls launched the two slams in the same inning. Justin Collins and Andrew Dunlap both hit bases-loaded blasts as part of a ten-run second inning. Rice now has six grand slams overall, the most in a single season since recording six in 2006.
Red Hot Streakers: Andrew Dunlap's grand slam extended his hitting streak to match his season high eight-game stretch from earlier in the year. There is, however, a little more to his production than the last eight games. When going back over the last 28 games, Dunlap is 42-of-111 (.378) with 11 home runs, two triples and seven doubles for an eye-opening .775 slugging percentage. He's also been reaching base at a .477 pace over the last 28 games... Aaron Beaulaurier extended his hitting streak to a career best seven games. The junior outfielder is a combined 12-for-29 (.414) with two doubles and a triple (.552 SLG%), and he has scored eight runs in the last seven games... Junior Braden Comeaux has reached base in each of the last 12 games.
Good Gneiting: Junior Bradley Gneiting tied a career high with five base hits and he set a new personal best with four runs scored. There have been only three occasions where an Owl has posted five hits in a game this season, and Gneiting has now done it twice (other vs. Prairie View).
Behind The Dish: Sophomore Justin Collins returned to his starting catcher's duty. He drove in a career-high six runs making his 32nd start behind the plate.
More High RBI: Senior Brandt Frazier tallied a career high four RBI, including a rocket double to the wall in right-center with the bases loaded.
On The Mound: Junior Matt Canterino made his ninth start of the season, each time in the opening game of the Owls' weekend series. When facing Charlotte a year ago at Reckling Park Canterino made a rare Saturday start in game two of that series. (Roel Garcia started the 2018 series opener vs. the 49ers.) With a big lead Canterino left the game after 6.0 innings. He finished the night with a pair of strikeouts to give him 293 for his career.
Tense Moments Resolved: With Rice batting in the top of the eighth inning, umpire Steve Sanders suddenly collapsed close his spot at home plate. Emergency medical crews, including Rice baseball trainer Adrian Ramon, were quick respond and provide care. After 30 tense minutes the good news was that Sanders was responsive. He left the field on an EMS gurney to a very supportive ovation. The remainder of the game was completed with two umpires.
