Rice Offense Supports Canterino With Eight Runs On 13 Hits
The Owls' ace had pitched well in his previous three starts to maintain a 2.00 season ERA. In the series opener against the Sooners the right-hander scattered just two hits and a walk while striking out six in 6.0 innings to post his first win of the season. He was charged with one run which was unearned after an Owl fielding error.
Where Canterino worked his way into his stride the Rice offense was quick to give him some support. The Owls opportunistically jumped on the scoreboard for a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first before adding another in the second on a RBI single by Bradley Gneiting to score Cade Edwards. The Blue & Gray then pulled away with three in the fourth and single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth.
Edwards ended up leading all players with three hits. Eight Owls hit safely in the contest, with some of the biggest cheers for Aaron Beaulaurier's first Division I homer to start the sixth. The senior pitching tandem of Kendal Jefferies (2.0 ip) and Blair Lewis (1.0 ip) closed out the final three frames without allowing any runs.
Rice is now 7-8 overall with its third straight win over a team from the Big 12 conference. Saturday's second game of the weekend series is scheduled for 2 pm. Sunday's finale is set for a 1 pm first pitch.
