Owls Combine Solid Start From Moss With 13 Hits
Moss had been sidelined the first part of the early season and his return to action is a big key for the year, particularly with Conference USA league games fast-approaching. The junior right-hander scattered three hits over a season-long 5.0 innings, allowing just one earned run with no walks and recording one strikeout. Jackson Tyner then came in and worked two hitless frames and Kendal Jefferies picked up his second save of the season by working the eighth and ninth, which he ended with sensational strikeouts to halt two Houston rallies.
Eight Owls in the batting order finished the frigid night with 13 hits, the second-straight game the offense has heated up to reach double-digits. In the top of the first inning Braden Comeaux quickly extended his hitting streak to a season-best eight games and he went on to post a three-hit game for the second time this season. Senior Dominic DiCaprio went 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI, continuing a steady weekend where he was selected to the 2019 College Classic All-Tournament team (announced Tuesday as the team was arriving at U.H.).
"It's nice to see our guys start doing a better job," said Rice head coach Matt Bragga. "We couldn't have played any worse than we were playing. They have been working really hard and are starting to see some fruits of their labor."
The Owls are now 6-7 on the season with three-straight wins. With the victory Rice has claimed the opening game of the annual Silver Glove Series between the crosstown foes.
After four games off campus Rice is back at Reckling Park on March 6 to begin a six-game homestand. The Owls host longtime foe Sam Houston State Wednesday at 6:30 pm before a three-game weekend series at home vs. Big 12 power Oklahoma March 8-10.
