Card-Childers in second place in heptathlon
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Rice freshman vaulter Natan Rivera captured a conference title in his C-USA Indoor Championships debut, winning the pole vault with a clearance of 5.18m (17-00.00) to highlight the Owls' efforts on Saturday.
Rivera, from El Salvador, earned the seventh C-USA Indoor pole vault title in program history by clearing 5.18m on his first attempt, beating out North Texas freshman Brock Hottel in one less attempt.
The Owls closed the evening by winning the distance medley relay for a second straight year. The foursome of Reagan Olguin, David Diaz, Jason Bugg, and Matthew Murray crossed the finish line in 10:05.14, defeating Middle Tennessee by almost five full seconds. Olguin also qualified for the Sunday finals of the 800m by winning his heat and placing second overall with a time of 1:53.68. Murray (4:20.39-won heat), along with Alex Topini (4:18.57), also advanced to Sunday competition by qualifying for the finals in the mile.
Redshirt senior Charlie Card-Childers closed strong in the heptathlon and will enter Sunday in second place (3033 points), just 100 points back of UTSA's Gary Haasbrook. Card-Childers set a new C-USA Indoor heptathlon high jump record by clearing 2.05m (6-08.75) to earn 850 points. He also won the shot put (13.14m/22-0.75) and placed third (7.36) in the 60m dash. Freshman Corbett Fong sits in fifth place (2620 points) in the heptathlon after beginning Saturday with a second place finish (7.24) in the 60m dash.
In throws, Michael Yow (6th-18.20m) and Nick Hicks (8th-16.62m) collected a combined three team points for the Owls.
As a team the Owls are in sixth place with 24 points after six scored events.
