
Preview: Owls Set to Compete at C-USA Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The 2019 Conference USA Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships will take place this Saturday-Sunday (Feb. 16-17), at the Birmingham CrossPlex and will be hosted by UAB for an eighth consecutive season.
Action will begin at 9 a.m. (CT) on Saturday with the combined events, starting with both the heptathlon and pentathlon. Jumps and throws will commence at 2 p.m. with running event preliminaries and finals starting at 4 p.m.
Sunday will see the rest of the heptathlon events completed at 9 a.m. followed by field events at 11 a.m. The day will conclude with the final running events at 1 p.m. and the awards presentation at 4:15 p.m. Sunday coverage will shift from CUSAtv to ESPN+ beginning at 2 p.m.
On the men's side, Rice senior Reagan Olguin enters this weekend with the top time (1:50.14) in the 800m as does the Owls distance medley relay team (9:56.15). In addition, freshman Natan Rivera has the second-best clearance (5.20m/17-0.75) in the pole vault.
The Rice women are led by juniors Michelle Fokam (jumps) and sprinter Hannah Jackson. Fokam is the league-leader in both the long jump (6.39m/20-11.75) and triple jump (13.22m/43-4.5) while Jackson holds the top 200m time (23.67) in C-USA this season. Freshman thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir, from Iceland, has burst onto the scene and will enter this weekend as the favorite in the shot put after recording a distance of 15.64m (51-3.75) earlier this season at the Leonard Hilton Memorial.
Last season both the Rice men and women placed fifth overall.
Admission prices are as follows: a two-day pass is $20 for adults and $10 for youth (12-17); while a single day ticket $15 per day for adults and $6 for youth (12-17). Admission is FREE for children age 11 and under and for students with valid ID cards who attend a C-USA member institution.
