Owls close the second round in eighth-place
Dallas, Texas — Sophomore Jake Benson had a career day to lead Rice in the second round of the Trinity Forest Invitational, played at the par-71, 7,330-yard Trinity Forest Golf Club.
Benson, who entered the day tied for 32nd-place, fired a career-best 67 to move up 25 places to sit in a seventh-place tie at four-under par. The Nottingham, England native carded six birdies to just two bogeys. His 36-hole score of 138 is also a career-best. The 67 is his third round in the 60's this year and the fourth of his career as well as his fourth round of par or better this year and the 12th of his career.
Sophomore Rishi Kejriwal is tied for 30th-place at one-over par after posting a second round 73 to give him a season-best 36-hole score of 143. Freshman Harrison Hineline, playing in his first career collegiate tournament, is two-over par in a 43rd-place tie after carding a 74.
Junior Nicholas Duggan is tied for 52nd-place at four-over par after shooting his second straight 73. Senior Grant Rogers set season-bests for low round (73) and low 36-hole score (148) to sit six-over par in a tie for 64th-place and freshman Austin Escamilla, playing as an individual, is in 82nd-place, 16-over par after shooting a 76.
Rice is in eighth-place at two-over par after carding a 286.
"Jake (Benson) was two holes away from posting a statement round today," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "The team is ripe for a great round as well. That round is still out there, so we'll go hunting for it tomorrow."
SMU leads the tournament at 20-under par, four strokes in front of the College of Charleston. Little Rock's Justin Warren leads the individual competition at 12-under par, two strokes in front of Thomas Rosenmueller of North Texas.
Rice tees off in the final round tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT. The Owls are paired with student-athletes from New Mexico and UTSA.
