Rice is tied for ninth-place
Dallas, Texas — Sophomore Rishi Kejriwal and freshman Harrison Hineline lead the Rice golf team after one round of the Trinity Forest Invitational, played at the par-71, 7,330-yard Trinity Forest Golf Club.
The duo are tied for 21st-place after each fired a one-under 70. For Kejriwal, it is his first round of par or better this year and the seventh of his career. Hineline, playing in his first career collegiate tournament, posted his first round of par or better in his first career round.
Sophomore Jake Benson opened with an even par 71 to sit in a 32nd-place tie. It is his third round of par or better this year and the 11th in his career.
Rice carded an even par 284 to sit in a ninth-place tie with UTSA.
Junior Nicholas Duggan is tied for 49th-place at two-over par after posting a 73. Senior Grant Rogers carded a four-over 75 to sit in a tie for 68th-place and freshman Austin Escamilla, playing as an individual, is tied for 80th-place after shooting an 11-over 82.
"We were really close to posting a great round today," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "We left a few out there on the back nine. We prepared well for the round and that's the plan for the next two days so we'll see what the course gives us."
Baylor and SMU are tied for the tournament lead at 11-under par, two strokes in front of North Texas. Florida's John Axelsen, Little Rock's Justin Warren and Noah Goodwin of SMU are tied for the individual lead at seven-under par.
Rice tees off in the final round tomorrow at 9:45 a.m. CT. The Owls are paired with student-athletes from Abilene Christian and Sam Houston State.
