Reliable Target
Austin Trammel has caught 22 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns in the last three games to vault into the Owls' season top ten. He has 59 receptions this season (third in C-USA) ranks seventh in school history. James Sykes is sixth with 76 in 1976. Trammell caught eight for 112 yards and two touchdowns vs. UTEP, reaching the century mark for the first time.
Reliable Targets
In addition to Austin Trammell's 59 receptions, Austin Walter (40) and Aaron Cephus (40) have also reached career-highs this season and give the Owls their first trio of receivers with more than 40 catches since 2008 when James Casey set a school record with 111, followed by Jarett Dillard (87) and Toren Dixon (50). Walter has 497 receiving yards this year and needs three to join Trammell (600) and Cephus (565) give the Owls three receivers with at least 500 yards since 2008 (Casey 1, 329; Dillard 1,310 and Dixon 598).
Prudy Picking up the Pace
True freshman Prudy Calderon has started the last six games at strong safety and has picked off four passes along with 22 tackles, a TFL and five PBUs over that time. He picked off two near the goal line at LA Tech last Saturday, becoming the first Owl with multiple interceptions in a game since current Chicago Bear Bryce Callahan (who had an interception of his own on Sunday vs. Detroit) picked off a pair at Kansas in 2012. He leads the Owls with four interceptions this year, the most by an Owl since current Cleveland Brown Phillip Gaines had four in 2013 and needs one to move into the Owls season top ten. He is the first Rice freshman to have multiple interceptions in a season since Callahan had six as a redshirt freshman in 2011.
Bowlers
Seven teams on Rice's 2018 schedule have already reached bowl eligibility (FIU, Hawai'i, Houston, LA Tech, LSU, North Texas and UAB) while Wake Forest is one win shy and Southern Miss needs two wins. Two of the Owls four nonconference opponents for 2019 (Army and Texas) have reached bowl eligibility while Wake Forest and Baylor are one win away.
