J.P. Heath has been “Voice of the Owls” since July 2012. Heath handles play-by- play duties for football, mens basketball and baseball games while also hosting weekly coaches shows and the Rice Owls Insider podcast. He calls select games for ESPN+ while also providing public speaking and voiceover content for the athletic department. Heath started at Rice in 2009 calling baseball.
Heath was a News/Sports Director at Yates Broadcasting in Lufkin-Nacogdoches for seven years. In that time, he was nominated for Best Talk Show by the Houston Press Club for The Porch in 2006 and won the Angelina County Golden Anvil Award for his non-stop news coverage during Hurricane Ike in 2008. He also reported on the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy in 2003.
Heath handled award-winning play-by-play duties for his alma mater, Texas A&M-Commerce (B.A. English) from 2009-2012 on KETR 88.9 FM. He has also worked part-time as a national update anchor for Yahoo! Sports Radio and as a Prevention Specialist at two non-profits, speaking to youth about the dangers of alcohol and tobacco. He and his wife Lisa enjoy reading, going to the beach and watching On Patrol Live. They are proud dog parents of two mini-schnauzers, Darci and Dunkin.
