
Owls Surge to Fourth-Place Finish at Miramont Invitational

BRYAN, Texas - After a slow start on Monday, Rice University men's golf took advantage of great weather conditions on Tuesday to finish strong in the weather-shortened Miramont Invitational. The Owls moved up six places to tie in fourth with a 302-286--588 (+12).
A pair of seniors paced the squad, as Joe Beck III and Tommy Economou each racked up his first top-20 finish of the fall season. Beck notched a 77-69--146 (+2) to tie for 20th. His 69 on Tuesday marked a new career low as he tallied five of his six birdies in the final round.
Economou matched his classmate in 20th place with a 73-73--146 (+2). He tallied five birdies and 24 pars at the event.
Sophomore Kevin Reilly followed with a 76-71--147 (+3), good for 23rd place. Six of his eight birdies came in Tuesday's round, including four in a seven-hole stretch on the back nine.
Freshman Mario Carmona and junior James Lee rounded out the squad in 37th place, with both players keeping up the trend of improving on Tuesday. Carmona posted a 77-73--150 (+6), with three birdies on Tuesday to pair with the one he carded on Monday.
Lee posted an eagle and two birdies on Monday and followed up with two more birdies in Tuesday's round.
Competing individually, three more Owls finished strong at the event. In just his third collegiate competition, Mitchell Meissner tied for 23rd at 76-71--147 (+3). All four of the rookie's birdies came in his season-best round on Tuesday.
Jeff Wibawa followed in 30th place with a 79-70--149 (+5). The senior notched four birdies on the back nine on Tuesday and finished the tournament with six.
In his season debut, Trey Johnson carded an 82-73--155 (+11), good for 63rd place. The junior tallied two birdies in each round.
Houston won the event with a 565 (-11), 16 strokes ahead of UTSA. Columbia edged the Owls for third place by one stroke, and Rice tied with co-host Sam Houston State, Louisiana-Lafayette and Texas State.
ULL's Louis Kelly claimed the medal at the inaugural event with a 138 (-6), one stroke ahead of UH's Roman Robledo.
Rice wraps up its fall slate on Oct. 27-28 at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate at Vero Beach, Fla.
