
Owls Come Out Firing at Quail Valley Intercollegiate

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Senior Tommy Economou knocked in a pair of eagles in the second round of the Quail Valley Intercollegiate on Monday to help Rice University men's golf to a 11th-place standing heading into the final round. The Owls carded a 292-290—582 (+6) over the first 36 holes at Quail Valley Golf Club.
Economou shot a 76 in his opening round, with the lone birdie coming on the par-five third hole. He then turned around and launched his two eagles in a span of five holes - the 565-yard 10th and 530-yard 14th - in the afternoon round to tally a 71 and pull into a tie for 39th place overall.
The Owls led the field on Monday with 119 pars, two more than host McNeese State.
Sophomore Kevin Reilly paced the squad at 69-73—142 (-2), good for 15th place. Playing in his home state for the first time with the Owls, he notched 15 pars and three birdies in the morning and tacked on four more birdies in the afternoon round.
Mario Carmona followed in 33rd place with a 73-72—145 (+1). The rookie notched five of his eight birdies in the opening round.
James Lee holed five birdies on the day for a 75-74—149 (+5), good for 54th. Joe Beck III rounded out the squad with a 75-75—150 (+6). He stands in 59th place with two of his three birdies coming in the opening round.
North Florida leads the field with a 564 (-12), two strokes ahead of McNeese State. The Owls rank three strokes back of ninth-place Bowling Green and Connecticut.
Kentucky's Tyler McDaniel, Jacksonville's Colin Monagle and North Florida's Joey Patronio each carded a 137 (-7) to tie for the individual lead, one stroke ahead of three more golfers tied for fourth place.
Tuesday's final round tees off at 8 a.m. The Owls begin on the 10th hole with tee times starting at 8:40 a.m. ET.
