MADISON, Miss. - Rice University freshman Chris Contreras birdied his final hole at the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate Tuesday to card an even par 72 en route to the first Top 20 performance of his career.
Thunderstorms during second-round play Monday afternoon suspended the Ole Miss-hosted tournament which was shortened to 36 holes. The remaining holes of the tournaments were played out Tuesday morning.
Contreras actually birdied three of his final five holes on Tuesday.
After the shotgun-start tournament resumed, the San Antonio native had back-to-back birdies at No. 13 and 14, a pair of par four holes. He bogeyed No. 15 but wrapped up his round with a birdie on the Reunion Golf and Country Club course's longest hole, the par five, 640-yard No. 17.
Contreras finished in a tie for 17th at the tournament. So did Rice senior Michael Whitehead who, after an opening round 69, shot a 77 for the second round. Whitehead had just one birdie during a final round in which he shot a 77 to finish with a two-round 146 (+2) score.
As a team, Rice shot a final-round 305 to finish with a 599 (+23) and post a 13th-place finish.
South Alabama shot a 571 (-5) to win the tournament by six strokes over runner-up Southern Miss. Southeastern Louisiana shot a 580 (+4) for the tournament to finish third while UCF was fourth with a 581.
Phillipp Westermann had four birdies on the front nine and held off South Alabama's Lane Hulse to win the individual title by a stroke. Westermann and Hulse both shot opening-round 68s to share the first-round lead. Westermann's 70 on Tuesday gave him a two-round score of 138 (-6) to better Husle's final round by one shot.
A total of five Conference USA schools competed in the tournament. The C-USA Championship is the next event up for Rice. The conference championship is slated for April 24-26 at the Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Ark.
