LAREDO - Michael Whitehead birdied two of his final three holes during second-round play at the 60th Border Olympics to finish with a five-under par 67. At nine-under par through 36 holes, the Rice senior will begin Saturday's final round tied for second and just two strokes back of the individual lead.
Whitehead's play has been solid over a busy week of tournament play. On Tuesday, he concluded play at The Duck Invitational in a tie for second. The performance in Eugene, Ore., propelled him to No. 50 in Golfstat's individual rankings. On Wednesday, he was named Conference USA's Golfer of the Week.
On Friday, Whitehead quickly separated himself from most in the 19-team tournament field. He carded an opening round 68. He recovered from a bogey on his first hole - he began his round at the par three, No. 12 - to eagle the 586-yard, par five, No. 13. The Sugar Land native went on to play the rest of the round at four-under.
"Michael played excellent today," Rice head coach Drew Scott. "He was just really solid. He is on such a roll and it's great to watch."
As a team, Rice shot a 292 then a 282 on Friday. The Owls are two-under par for the tournament and currently tied for eighth with Lamar.
Rice junior Erik Mayer had four birdies on the front nine of the Laredo Country Club Course to finish his second round with a collegiate career low-round 69 and help the Owls to a 282 team score Friday afternoon. Mayer had a 74 earlier in the day and his two-round 143 (-1) has him tied for 25th in the individual standings.
Arkansas' Sebastian Cappelen shot a tournament-low 64 Friday afternoon and with a 69 earlier in the day leads the individual standings with a two-round score of 133 (-11).
Whitehead is tied for second with Oklahoma's Will Kropp. Whitehead and Kropp are two strokes ahead of the New Mexico State's Gaston De La Torre and Baylor's Cody Paladino who are tied for fourth.
Heading into Saturday's final round, No. 18 Arkansas and No. 28 Oklahoma are tied for first in the team standings. Both teams have 553 two-round scores (-23) and are nine strokes ahead of third-place Baylor. No. 30 Liberty is currently at nine-under while No. 34 Indiana is at six-under.
"We had a good today," Scott said of the Owls' team performance on Friday. "We have an opportunity to play well tomorrow and get inside the Top Five against a solid field.
Tomorrow's final round is again set for a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The Owls will start play at Nos. 9, 10 and 11 and will be paired with New Mexico State, Texas-Arlington and Kansas.
