UTA/Waterchase Invitational Final Results
FORT WORTH - Rice University senior Michael Whitehead fired a two-under par 70 Tuesday to finish in a tie for fifth at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational. Whitehead was three-under par 213 (72-71-70) for the tournament.
After carding one of the best rounds in recent school history Monday afternoon - a 281 - Rice shot a 295 team score on Tuesday to finish eighth at the tournament with a three-round score of 874 (+10).
"Conditions were harder today. The pin placements were tougher," Rice head coach Drew Scott said. "Our guys competed and we're making progress as a team, as evident from our improvement over last week. We're not trying to win a national championship in September. We are working to make progress toward post-season play."
Rice began the season a week ago with a tie for 13th at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate played in Hattiesburg, Miss.
On Tuesday in the DFW Metroplex, North Texas finished with an 844 score to win the team championship by 21 strokes over second-place Southern Miss. Louisiana Tech was third (867) and Sam Houston State was fourth (868).
After rounds in the 60s on Monday, the top three finishers all shot over par Tuesday. Despite a 76 Tuesday, USM's Derek Plucienski shared the individual championship with North Texas' Curtis Donahoe. Both golfers finished with three-round scores of 209 (-7). Texas Wesleyan's Armando Villarreal shot a 77 on Tuesday to finish with a three-round 210. Steven Lecuyer of Central Arkansas shot a 69 Tuesday to finish with a 212, one stroke ahead of Whitehead and Santa Clara's Cory Mehl.
Rice freshman Jeff Wibawa also finished in the Top 20, tying for 18th with a three-round score of 218 (73-71-74).
The Owls have their lone break in the fall schedule next week before returning to play Oct. 4-5 at the Louisiana Tech Squire Creek Invitational. That tournament will be the first of three in as many weeks for Rice as the squad will wrap up the fall season in mid-October.
