CHOUDRANT, La. - After a day of mixed results, Rice senior Michael Whitehead fired a one-under par 71 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for second individually at the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Intercollegiate.
Whitehead opened tournament play Monday morning with a tournament-low 66 but a second-round 78 left him tied for third after the first day.
"It was the same course and conditions but a tale of two different rounds," Rice head coach Drew Scott said of Whitehead's play on Monday. "In the morning he had control of the golf ball and made some key putts. But the same putts didn't go in during the afternoon. I think he started to press a little more. Today he was really steady. He shot a 33 over the last nine holes which was great especially considering it began to get a little windy in the afternoon."
Whitehead had a three-round score of 215 (-1) to tie for second with LSU's Ken Looper. Southeastern Louisiana's Horacio Leon carded a 69 to add to his second round lead, winning the tournament by seven strokes with a 208.
Rice freshman Jeff Wibawa finished just outside of the Top 20, shooting a three-round score of 227 (+11) to tie for 22nd.
The Owls shot a 304 on Tuesday to finish with a three-round score of 912 and finish in a tie for sixth as team with Sam Houston State. Rice and Sam Houston finished six strokes back of fifth-place UMKC. Host Louisiana Tech shot a 290 on Tuesday to finish with a three-round score of 874 and win the team title by one stroke over Southeastern Louisiana.
"We played a little bit better today but we had two 83s today and had to count one of those scores," Scott said. "We're disappointed with the finish but we are looking forward to our next two tournaments and continuing to improve."
Rice is back on the road next week, traveling to the Rod Myers Invitational hosted by Duke University.
